GSD Health

Although most good breeders take the time and effort required to ensure their breeding dogs and puppies are healthy, a dogs health is not something that can be guaranteed and potential owners should be aware of the health problems that can and do occurr in the German Shepherd. The British Veterinary Association (BVA), Kennel Club  (KC) and Laboklin provide a range of tests for some inherited diseases, giving breeders the option to breed from dogs which have fewer or no signs of inherited disease and thus help to improve health and reduce the incidence of these diseases. The links below are for some of the more known health issues, but for more in depth information please speak to your vet.

Hip Dysplasia Elbow Dysplasia Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) Panosteitis Anal Furunculosis
Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) Cancer   Gastric Torsion (Bloat)  Epilepsy

Please do not let the above information scare you away from GSD's. It's there to encourage you to find a reputable breeder who is knowledgeable about these conditions and does their best to keep their breeding program free of them. A responsible breeder will welcome any questions regarding the health of their breeding dogs/puppies and any of the above conditions, so please don't be afraid to ask about them.
